Alkylphenol ethoxylates
What is Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylate?
Alkyl phenol ethoxylate is a nonionic surfactant made by ethoxylating alkylphenols (e.g. nonylphenol, octylphenol); it has good emulsifying, wetting, and detergent properties.
What is the CAS number of Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylate?
The CAS number of Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylate is 1338-43-8.
What is Alkyl Phenol Ethoxylate used for?
Alkyl phenol ethoxylates are used in industrial and institutional cleaners; in textiles; in agrochemicals; in emulsion polymerization; and in metal cleaning and degreasing. Venus Ethoxyethers manufactures and supplies in India; request a quote for your requirements.
Alkylphenol ethoxylates are nonionic surfactants produced by the reaction of branched-chain alkylphenols with ethylene oxide, forming hydrophilic ethoxylate chains attached to a hydrophobic phenolic backbone. The alkyl groups commonly used in their manufactureβsuch as octyl and nonylβare typically derived from petrochemical intermediates including diisobutylene and tripropylene. By adjusting the number of ethylene oxide units added during synthesis, manufacturers can tailor solubility, detergency, emulsification capacity, and wetting performance to suit specific industrial requirements.
Alkylphenols themselves are organic compounds consisting of one or more alkyl chains bonded to a phenol nucleus, which contains an aromatic ring and a hydroxyl functional group. Common examples include 4-tert-Octylphenol, 4-Nonylphenol, 4-n-Octylphenol, and 4-n-Nonylphenol. These compounds serve as key intermediates in the production of alkylphenol ethoxylates, which have historically been widely used as industrial surfactants due to their excellent surface-active properties, stability, and cost-effectiveness.
In industrial applications, alkylphenol ethoxylates function as emulsifiers in polymerization processes, enabling stable dispersion of monomers during the production of synthetic polymers. They are also used as detergents and wetting agents in textile processing, particularly in wool scouring and dyeing, as well as in metal cleaning and treatment operations. In agriculture, they serve as adjuvants in pesticide formulations, improving spreading and penetration on plant surfaces. However, many alkylphenol ethoxylates and their degradation products have been classified as endocrine disruptors because of their weak estrogen-like activity, leading to regulatory restrictions and increased environmental scrutiny in several regions.
Beyond these uses, alkylphenol ethoxylates are important organic industrial chemicals in the formulation of lubricating oil additives, household laundry and dishwashing detergents, emulsifiers, and solubilizers. They are also found in certain personal care products, particularly hair care formulations, and as active ingredients in spermicides such as Nonoxynol-9. Additionally, they are present in laboratory detergents including Triton X-100 and in some pesticide formulations. Manufacturers such as Venus Goa produce a broad range of alkylphenol ethoxylates, including Dodecyl Phenol ethoxylate (CAS 9014-92-0), Nonyl Phenol ethoxylates (CAS 9016-45-9), and Octyl Phenol ethoxylate (CAS 27193-28-8), supporting diverse industrial and specialty chemical applications.
