Why crude emulsions form
Formation water, injected water, drilling fluids, asphaltenes, resins, naphthenic acids, fines, and production chemicals all stabilize water-in-oil droplets. Tight emulsions raise BS&W, increase corrosion risk from chlorides, cut pipeline acceptance, and load treaters.
Where to inject
- Wellhead / manifold: Maximum residence time before separation
- Upstream of heater treater / FWKO: Most common continuous injection point
- Desalter charge: Refinery / central processing with wash water
- Produced-water line: For reverse (O/W) emulsions before discharge or reinjection
Continuous injection with calibrated pumps beats batch slug treating for stable BS&W control.
Bottle-test SOP (field lab)
- Sample fresh emulsion at treater inlet or wellhead
- Aliquot equal volumes; dose candidates at 5–50 ppm
- Heat to field treater temperature (often 50–80°C)
- Agitate gently to simulate flow; start timer
- Score water drop rate, interface sharpness, and water clarity
- Measure residual BS&W in the oil phase
- Shortlist 2–3 winners for continuous field trial

Troubleshooting
- Slow water drop: Wrong chemistry for crude; re-screen bottle tests; check temperature
- Dirty interface / rag: Solids or asphaltene load — consider blend change, heat, or filtration
- Clear oil but oily water: Reverse emulsion issue — O/W breaker or flotation chemistry
