Emulsion breaker vs demulsifier

In oilfield language, emulsion breaker and demulsifier mean the same product class. Purchasing specs and SDS documents may use either term. Why crude emulsions form

Formation water, injected water, drilling fluids, asphaltenes, resins, naphthenic acids, fines, and production chemicals all stabilize water-in-oil droplets. Tight emulsions raise BS&W, increase corrosion risk from chlorides, cut pipeline acceptance, and load treaters.

Where to inject

  • Wellhead / manifold: Maximum residence time before separation
  • Upstream of heater treater / FWKO: Most common continuous injection point
  • Desalter charge: Refinery / central processing with wash water
  • Produced-water line: For reverse (O/W) emulsions before discharge or reinjection

Continuous injection with calibrated pumps beats batch slug treating for stable BS&W control.

Bottle-test SOP (field lab)

  1. Sample fresh emulsion at treater inlet or wellhead
  2. Aliquot equal volumes; dose candidates at 5–50 ppm
  3. Heat to field treater temperature (often 50–80°C)
  4. Agitate gently to simulate flow; start timer
  5. Score water drop rate, interface sharpness, and water clarity
  6. Measure residual BS&W in the oil phase
  7. Shortlist 2–3 winners for continuous field trial

Over-treating wastes chemical and can create rag layers; under-treating leaves water in crude.

Troubleshooting

  • Slow water drop: Wrong chemistry for crude; re-screen bottle tests; check temperature
  • Dirty interface / rag: Solids or asphaltene load — consider blend change, heat, or filtration
  • Clear oil but oily water: Reverse emulsion issue — O/W breaker or flotation chemistry
  • Sudden upset after drilling: OBM contamination — raise dose and re-bottle-test with contaminated sample; see OBM additives
  • VES / stimulation returns: Residual viscoelastic surfactants may tighten emulsion — coordinate with stimulation chemistry
