Primary emulsifier vs secondary emulsifier
In personal care, a primary emulsifier provides the main interfacial stabilization for the emulsion (often mid-to-high HLB grades such as CETEARETH-20 or Steareth-20 for O/W creams). A secondary emulsifier (co-emulsifier / co-surfactant) reinforces droplet packing, improves long-term stability, builds viscosity, and refines texture — typically lower-HLB partners such as Steareth-2, CETETH-2, or Glyceryl Stearate paired with the primary.
